Boston Bruins fans... Racist??

Over the past few days, a lot of noise has been made over racist comments on twitter in regards to PK Subban. Do the comments of a few fans deserve as much attention as they got? As a fan base should we be labeled as racist? How often does this happen in sports? How can twitter become a reliable news source now?

I could go on about this topic for hours. How do you feel about this issue? Respond in 5-10 sentences to this topic. Twitter = Real Life. Twitter = News. A few racist fans=Racist fan base/ City

  1. Like it or not, racism is everywhere you look in sports. Whether it is joking or an actual straight up hate crime, fans will always be comparing black and white athletes. A few negative comments regarding an African American NHL player made by Boston fans does not in any way label our franchise as hateful or racist. Every city has immature, ignorant fans. Boston is no different than the rest. In regards to Twitter, I do not think that people understand the impact of what they "tweet". In today's society, anything that you put online is taken just as if those comments came directly out of your mouth. Overall as a country we need to realize the impact of what we post on social networks.

  2. The Boston Bruins played Montreal and there were a few fans on twitter that posted negative remarks against defenseman P.K. Subban. People then were going crazy saying how all Bostonian's are racist and ignorant which is completely false. Many of the tweets were deleted after the fans saw their actions and saw what they were saying and how offensive the tweets were. Most of the tweets were not even Boston Bruins fans. The media went nuts especially since racism is so big right now with the Donald Sterling fiasco. If the media sees or hears any bit of racism they are going to make a whole story out of it even if it is out of context. This twitter problem that just happened was extremely hurtful though. It was not necessary to post anything so rude because it reflects on the entire fan base which it should not because most people are not racist. The Bruins president addressed the negative tweets and comments made by those people and was very polite in saying that just because those people decided to say those uncivil things, does not mean everyone that is a fan of the Boston Bruins is racist and that they should not blame all Bostonian's for the careless peoples comments. They should take responsibility for their actions and own up to it and apologize because it was uncalled for to say what they said. I do not think that the tweets should have brought up this much attention though because a lot of fans have negative hurtful things to say about the rival teams. Twitter is always reliable because its so accurate and people update theirs like crazy.

  3. The racist remarks on Twitter made by a select few racist Bruins fans in regards to PK Subban are incredibly childish, and ignorant. PK Subban is a great athlete, and his high level of play made a lot of Bruins fans mad, but it also angered a few of the racist ones. However this does not mean that an entire city/fan base should be labeled as racist. That is incredibly unfair, and is so blatantly not true. This tends to happen a lot in professional sports, but after the Donald Sterling incident, even certain isolated incidents regarding race are being blown out of proportion. Twitter is a great source to obtain news as it happens, but this news can often be untrue, and disingenuous. Twitter news should not be as easily accepted as it currently is, but i'm not sure if that will ever change.

  4. No, fans should not be considered racist based off what one person said. there's an entire city of people and one person doesn't speak for all of them. The case would be different if it was someone who actually represents the people of the city, like the governor. To take these comments and blame an entire city for being racist is absolutely ridiculous. This completely takes what the city believes in out of context.

  5. I believe that twitter attracts far more attention than necessary. The Bruin's "fans" who posted racist comments on twitter towards PK Suban do not deserve all of this attention. They are inconsiderate, irrelevant people. This happens way too often in sports because people still believe African Americans don't deserve the light of day. Racism still clearly exists, and is weirdly reoccurring in sports all the time. Its disgusting in my opinion. Twitter should not be a news source just because its a social media site, and has a nature of being vulgar. I don't believe we have a racist city just because of these idiots voicing their opinion. We still have the best city in the world, and that's a fact.

  6. No, the fans should not get this much attention. A fan base should not be determined by a few dumb comments. There are many good fans out there, and should not be labeled as racists. There are always a few bad fans, and they should just be ignored. They might not know how it feels to be discriminated against, and don't realize the significance of what they say. This happens too often in sports. Social media such as twitter creates controversy and trouble. People post hateful comments on twitter, and don't realize the consequences of their actions. Twitter ca never become a reliable new source because there are too many ways that people can spread rumors. It only takes one comment to spark rumors hat are never true. People could easily lie on twitter, and can hurt other people very easily.

  8. P.K. Subban was a victim of racism as a result of scoring in double overtime on Thursday's game. The racist tweets came from angry Bruins fans. I think that the issue should be addressed, but I do not think it should place a label on the city of Boston. According to CBS Sports, the terms Subban and the N-word was used simultaneously on 17,000 tweets. The problem with this is, they did not measure the opposite side; those tweets could have been the minority. The racist remarks were childish but that does not mean the fan base as a whole should be labeled racist. Racism is still a problem in sports, but I do not think the players are racist. I think they view their peers as teammates or enemies. I also believe Twitter is not a reliable news source, as only 150 characters can be typed, and key background information could be missing.

  9. In my opinion, though most of the racist tweets about PK Subban were from Bruins fans, in no way does that label our fan base as "racist". No matter what way these fans put their anger into words towards Subban, they would have considered it racist just to blow everything up and get attention. People these days put everything on twitter without even thinking of the consequences. Though it was very harsh and they should have kept their opinions to themselves, it will always be a problem because people will address their hate and anger in anyway they want. When people are angry they don't think about what they say or do. I think people are too sensitive in some cases. Sure this was very inappropriate and unnecessary, but it isn't right to label the whole fan base as racist when it was only a select few who take the game to this level of rashing on other people. Also, it is not just people who live in Boston that are Bruins fans so it isn't appropriate to label just Bostonian's as racist. I personally do not think that these tweets should have been given as much attention as they did, but what else is new? Of course if you tweet something like this it will get blown up for the tabloids so that is their own fault. Racism is everywhere these days and it happens a lot in sports whether you see it or not. It will never go away so blowing up these issues isn't going to help anything. In my opinion it is just causing unnecessary issues.

  10. These tweets definitely do not deserve this much attention. A few rude fans making ignorant, racist comments does not at all reflect the Bruins or Boston. Racism will always be an issue in sports and people do not realize what impact their tweets will have. The tweets were extremely disrespectful and thankfully PK Subban responded with class and did not blame the Bruins or fans as a whole. This will all blow over soon and unfortunately there will be more race issues in sports in the future.

  11. STEREOTYPES. I thought everyone was against those things because everyone always makes a big deal when someone uses one...WELL WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?!?!? This is just a false stereotype. A few B's fans say a couple racist things blah blah blah who cares. But did you guys hear? A day later, EVERY SINGLE BRUINS FAN BECAME A DAMN RACIST.!!! Sorry y'all, but this ain't the south. Oh wait, that's a stereotype... TOO BAD. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind, but it looks like the everyone already is if they are going to say all Bruins fans are racist. Bruins fans aren't all racist. Case closed. Get out my face.

  12. I do not think that just because a few fans made some racist comments that the entire fan base should be considered racist. Every city has a few dumb and ignorant fans who make stupid comments about other players. If someone that played for the bruins made the comments than it would be an issue but because it was just some dumb fans I think it is becoming a bigger deal than it needs to be. Things that people post on twitter are always blown out of proportion and it should not be considered a valid news source. Every city has a few racist fans and there is nothing we can do to change that.

  13. I feel like most racist comments cant be taken seriously. Due to the Donald Sterling incident I feel like people are blowing things out of proportion. I highly doubt the majority of people aren't racist there just serious Boston fans.

  14. I don't believe that a few racist comments should be taken as seriously as they are, but if it was someone famous or noteworthy, then it would be a problem(Donald Sterling). I don't think that the Bruin's fan base should be labeled racist because a couple of stupid comments. The kids who spoke poorly about PK Subban are just a couple of punks looking for attention, and they must not be true fans of the Bruins if they are saying these things. There is always racism in sports, and this should just be ignored. I don't think twitter is a reliable news source unless your are getting your info from someone trustworthy.

  15. I honestly don't believe a couple comments that were initially made to be racist would make that much of an impact. They are made from fans who have no importance to the team, or the NHL. I don't believe it is okay for our entire Bruin's fan base should be blamed for a few ignorant peoples opinions. Twitter is only a gossip blog, nothing more than that. Nothing on the website should be taken that serious anymore. Obviously these kids don't have the true Bruins spirit if they are directly insulting one of our players!

  16. The racist comments made by fans are completely irrelevant. They should not have been taken nearly as seriously as they were. Just because some people have some out-there opinions that would be considered racist dosen't mean that the Bruins fan base as a whole is racist. Twitter is just somewhere where people put their opinions out there and should not matter so much in the sports world.

  17. I believe that the comments made on Twitter shouldn't have gotten this much attention. Many rude remarks have been made on social media in the past but they haven't been as big as this. A few fans shouldn't make the own city of Boston "racist"

  18. In the world we live in it seems like stereotyping should be gone, but unfortunately it is still very apparent. Coming down from the Donald Sterling racial incident people are feeding off of this topic. Having a team from Boston, a very high profiled city due to the recent marathon, playing a team with an African American just seems to good to be true for critics. I can just picture journalists on their twitter waiting for that one racial comment for a Bostonian to fire the canon. If everyone thinks of the story like this I believe others would see that this is nothing more than an individual voicing THEIR opinion, not Bostons.

  19. A few comments made by some Bruins fans shouldn't make the entire city of Boston racist. Some people don't think before for they speak. Its the same thing when they post comments on social media. People just post whatever is on their mind and don't think about the affect it will have on other people. When people use social media in a immature way, it causes a huge problem that can spread like wild fire. But the only people who should be blamed and accused as racists are the people that made the comments. A few ignorant people shouldn't ruin the reputation of a great city like Boston.

  20. The views expressed by the very small percentage of Bruins Fans should not warrant any serious attention from anybody. This is not indicative of the true Bruins fan base, sure we're obnoxious and passionate, but not ignorant and racist. P.K. Subban was better than the Bruins that night, so the minority of Bruins fans who have any racist views, took to Twitter to bombard Subban with a ton of comments. Twitter should be used to express opinions freely but with respect, but all too often, people leave out the respect aspect.

  21. The racist comments that were made by fans could not have been controlled by the city of Boston. The one thing that annoys me is that the comments that were made by people who don't even live in Boston but the city is of Boston is being punished for it. These comments are only being blown out of proportion due to the Donald Sterling incident that recently happened. If it weren't for that this issue wouldn't be blown up. A city can't control the things that happen on social media websites. The Boston fan base should not be labeled as racist because of a couple things that were said by a select few people not our entire fan base. Twitter and any social media network can not be labeled as a reliable source.
